Production History

2003: This film began as a concept when Vinit, the filmmaker, was commissioned to make a 20-minute documentary on the Health and Environmental Issues in Tannery and Textile Industries for a three-day Fulbright-sponsored industry-government conference in Chennai. Vinit visited towns all over India, like Ahmedebad, Banglore, Baroda, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, Kanpur, Kolkata, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, and Varanasi.

2004: Production commenced.

2005: Second visit to locations for documentation.

2006: Third visit to locations for documentation.

2007: Fourth round of local documentation. First assembly-cut. Acquired temporary music. Creation of first fine-cut, Black Waters, 57 minutes, for film festival screenings.

2008: Accepted at six international film festivals:

  • 10th Sacramento International Film Festival, Award: Best Environmental Vision
  • 7th EarthVision International Film Festival, Katherine Knight Award: Best Pollution Doc
  • 33rd Cleveland International Film Festival
  • 2nd da Vinci Film Festival
  • 5th Green Film Festival in Soeul, South Korea
  • 3rd Ranier Independent Film Festival

Fifth round of visits for documentation to re-shoot footage and acquire new documentation of evolving story.

2010: Re-structured edit and included educational graphic animation.

2011: Composition of original music for first.

Production Team

Vinit Parmar, Esq., began his film work as a sound mixer in New York fifteen years ago after making the transition from an established legal career of seven years. He works professionally as a sound mixer for features, shorts, and commercials, and continues to direct his own documentary films. He loves to teach film production courses as a full-time tenured faculty member of the Film Department at Brooklyn College as part of the City University of New York.

He is also currently producing and directing ONLY ONE CHILD: THE FANGS’ STORY, about the Fang family’s three siblings separated by their parents as they hide to avoid detection under the One-Child Policy. This project began as a Fulbright-Hayes Scholarship in 2006 on Women, Family and Social Change.

He is currently in production for QUEST FOR LIGHT, shot partly in the exotic and off-grid, ancient Sundarbans, as well as Brooklyn, about the many ways a Brooklyn resident inspires and learns from Indian villagers to practice traditional and renewable energy techniques to become sustainable in Brooklyn.

Original Music Composition
Premik, a composer, arranger, producer and an accomplished multi-instrumentalist performs on various flutes, soprano, alto and tenor saxophones, wind synthesizers, and lap steel guitar.
